Department of Linguistics, established in 1956, is one of the premier and the oldest institutions for the study of Linguistics in India.
IT was established with the objective of spreading Linguistics as a discipline in the western parts of U.P. The department has had the honour of having
many leading lights on its faculty and many of the products of the department have reached position of eminence both within the country and abroad.
With changing times, the length and breadth of Linguistics has increased many-folds and its face has completely
changed from what it was almost 60 years ago. From a field which was largely concerned with diachronic and comparatives studies (in a time when one
of the greatest and best-known figures of modern Linguistics, Noam Chomsky, was yet to appear on the scene, computers were still in its infancy and
brain imaging was unheard of), Linguistics has today emerged as one of the most interdisciplinary and exciting fields of studies across the globe.
As a result of a complete makeover of the field of Linguistics (or more aptly, Language Sciences) over the past few decades and a need to understand the
huge strides taken by the discipline, the department has also increased its scope and reach. With the induction of 4 young Assistant Professors
and 1 experienced Professor this semester, the Department is all set to become one of the leading centres for the study and research in Linguistics, not
only in India but across the globe. A complete overhaul and restructuring of the course structure (and several other changes in the pipeline) is carried
out to reflect the current focus areas of the discipline. Besides this training part, the department has also started cutting-edge research both in
descriptive linguistics as well as cross-disciplinary areas like Computational Linguistics and Neurolinguistics.
To sum it all, if you are interested in human languages, if you want to understand how human brain processes languages, if you want to develop
search engines better and more intelligent than Google (and machine translation systems much more accurate than Google Translate) and if you want
to know what Linguistics is, Dept. of Linguistics at KMI is the place to be in! We offer you some of the best educators and most dedicated
researchers in the field of Linguistics (even though the infrastructure may not actually give very positive signs about it)!! Come and be a
part of our team!
